CHAPTER TWELVE
Once again, going back to school on Monday was a lot harder than I’d have liked. I was supposed to meet Ethan at the end of the day but I had an unexpected delay—I’d fallen asleep in my last class, and then continued to doze for an additional fifteen minutes after class was dismissed. I’d woken to an empty room, feeling disturbed and a little disoriented. The teacher had obviously been “kind enough” not to wake me when he left.
Falling asleep in class was no surprise. I’d spent most of Sunday evening and well into the night catching up on school work, especially an assignment for English that was due. I’d never missed handing in an assignment in my life, but I’d been up so late finishing it that I’d slept in, almost been late for first period, dragged around the school all day, and had to fight not to drift off in most of my classes.
I hurried through the emptying halls, hoping Ethan hadn’t got fed up and left. We were supposed to meet in front of the school. I’d already pulled out my phone but there were so many dead spots in the halls that I hadn’t been able to get through. The same way I didn’t like to miss deadlines, I didn’t like to keep people waiting—it was inconsiderate.
“Hey, Graham!”
I spun around. It was Glenn. He was dressed for basketball. They practised every night they didn’t have a game. He was soaked with sweat and was standing by the drinking fountain outside the gym. I could hear the sound of squeaking shoes on the gym floor.
“How are you doing?” I asked.
“Not bad, but not great. Coach is working us hard after Friday’s loss.”
“It was a tough game. I thought you deserved to win.”
“Coach thought so too. Glad you came. I figure you and Ethan must be out having some adventures.”
“Adventure is almost his middle name…but you’d know that.”
Glenn had always been friendly with me but I had the feeling he was holding back. I couldn’t help thinking that he felt a little jealous of me. After all, I was kind of taking his place. I wondered how much he knew already and how much I should tell him. I didn’t want him to feel any worse.
“Yeah, we had some good times. I miss those adventures…well, sometimes…”
I looked at him in surprise. And it made me think—there was one thing I wanted to check on, even if I wasn’t sure I was going to like the answer.
“I guess when the basketball season is over you’ll be back working as Ethan’s wingman,” I said.
“Yeah, I’m sure we’ll go out some, you know, maybe all of us and some of the other guys, but I think that spot belongs to you now.”
“Oh, I thought you’d want it back,” I said.
He shook his head. “Don’t get me wrong, Ethan’s my buddy, he’s a great guy, and we had some great times together,” Glenn said. “It’s just that being around him can be tiring.
